Hatoma Island Guide 2026 | Coral Gardens, Snorkeling & Freediving
已更新:6天前
Some islands are most beautiful above the water. Hatoma Island, just north of Iriomote in Okinawa's Yaeyama Islands, may leave its greatest impression beneath the surface: reef fish weaving among branching corals, broad plate corals and delicate sea fans in astonishingly clear water.
This is part seven of our Yaeyama island series. Some StarlitSeas guests who have been to both Hatoma and Miyakojima's Yabiji reefs say they personally prefer Hatoma's underwater scenery. That is a subjective opinion, not an objective ranking. Visibility and reef health change with weather, water temperature and storms.

These are StarlitSeas-supplied original underwater and drone photos, not AI-generated reef scenes. They show the conditions at the time of photography, not a guarantee of visibility or wildlife on any particular day.
Why visit Hatoma Island?
Hatoma is a small inhabited island north of Iriomote, with a peaceful village and largely natural beaches. Taketomi Town highlights blue coral communities on its northern coast. In surrounding boat-accessible reef areas, guided trips may encounter branching corals, dense plate corals and many colorful reef fish. The phrase “underwater coral forest” describes the scenery, rather than one official named site.
Look closely and you see individual coral branches, plate layers and fish hiding among them. Look across the reef and the colonies seem to extend as far as the water's blue allows you to see. Coral is living habitat; enjoy it without contact.

Experience 1 — Guided coral-garden snorkeling
If you choose just one activity, consider a professionally guided boat-snorkeling trip. The operator selects suitable reef sites based on wind, current, visibility and coral conditions. Depending on the location, you may see extensive branching colonies, layered table corals and schools of tropical fish, sometimes visible clearly from the surface.
Not every Hatoma day trip includes offshore snorkeling. Some primarily visit the village and beaches. Ask whether the tour goes to boat-access-only coral gardens, how many swimming stops it includes and whether English-language guiding is available. Tours may combine Hatoma with Barasu Island and reefs north of Iriomote.
Experience 2 — Freediving for trained visitors
Properly trained freedivers may enjoy viewing reef structure from beneath the surface, but an ordinary snorkeling tour does not automatically permit breath-hold descents. Discuss your qualifications, buddy and rescue arrangements with the operator before booking.
Never freedive alone. Use an appropriate, trained one-up/one-down buddy system, never hyperventilate and stay within your training and the operator's site limits. Currents, boats and reef hazards can make some sites unsuitable. Do not descend close enough to touch or break coral.
Experience 3 — Hatoma lighthouse, beaches and village
The island deserves time above water, too. Hatoma Nakamui hill and its lighthouse offer views towards Iriomote and the surrounding sea. Explore the quiet village, Yara Beach and Mae-no-hama at a gentle pace. Respect residents, private property and traditional cultural activities.

Getting there — Ferries from Ishigaki
High-speed ferries leave Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal. Some sailings call at Iriomote's Uehara Port; the total journey is roughly 45–80 minutes depending on the service. Departures are comparatively limited, so confirm both outbound and return times before planning a day trip.
The Hatoma ferry route is highly weather-sensitive and may be cancelled for an entire day in rough seas. All Hatoma sailings were cancelled on October 16, 2026. Even if ferries to southern Iriomote's Ohara Port are running, Hatoma may remain unreachable. Check official notices on the day of departure.
A suggested one-day Hatoma trip
Take a confirmed morning ferry from Ishigaki. Join a guided boat snorkel over suitable reef sites, have lunch on the island, then visit Hatoma lighthouse and the beaches before returning on a confirmed ferry. This is a sample itinerary, not a scheduled trip.
If underwater exploration is your top priority, choose a full-day operator itinerary with multiple reef stops where possible, or consider staying overnight. Tour areas, transfers and marine activities depend on actual sea conditions.

Ocean safety and reef protection
Hatoma's natural beaches generally do not have lifeguards. Currents, reef channels, wind and boat traffic can make apparently calm water hazardous. Do not attempt to swim from shore to offshore coral gardens on your own. Go with an experienced operator and follow the required flotation and water-safety arrangements.
Never stand on coral, kick coral colonies, chase turtles or collect reef organisms. Coral ecosystems are under pressure from warming water, bleaching and storms; responsible travel helps protect what you came to see.
FAQ
Is Hatoma prettier than Yabiji? Beauty is subjective. Both places have exceptional reef scenery, and the experience depends on current reef health, weather and your own preferences.
Can non-swimmers join? Some tour operators accept guests with flotation support, subject to age, health and safety requirements. Freediving is not a beginner activity.
Can I swim to a huge coral forest from the beach? Not necessarily. Many featured reef sites are offshore and require a guide and boat.
Can I visit for one day? Often yes when sea conditions permit, but the ferry route is limited and weather-sensitive. Always confirm your return passage.
