What makes Kayama special?
This small uninhabited island has a coastline of about 2.5 km and is home to hundreds of free-ranging rabbits. It sits within Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, surrounded by the coral-rich Sekisei Lagoon.
How to get to Kayama Island
There is no scheduled public ferry. Visitors must reserve an organized landing tour, generally connecting through Kohama Island from Ishigaki. Follow your operator's confirmed meeting point, transfer and boat instructions.
Five things to enjoy
1. Rabbit watching: observe the free-ranging rabbits quietly. Never chase or pick them up; feed only as permitted by the operator.
2. White-sand beaches: stroll along turquoise shores and enjoy the island's peaceful atmosphere.
3. Guided snorkeling: discover colorful fish and coral in Sekisei Lagoon, subject to sea conditions and safety guidance.
4. Nature trails: explore approved paths and enjoy low coastal vegetation and island views.
5. Photography and relaxation: capture the rabbits and ocean, or inquire about seasonal camping and BBQ programs.
Half-day or full-day itinerary
Half day: meet your operator, transfer by tour boat, watch rabbits, walk along the beach and return at the confirmed time.
Full day: rabbit watching, beach photography, rest or lunch and guided snorkeling where conditions allow. Actual schedules depend on tides, weather and the booked tour.
Facilities and safety
The island is uninhabited but has visitor facilities operated for tours. Confirm toilets, showers, meals and gear in advance. Carry drinking water and sun protection. Trips may be cancelled in rough seas.
