Southwest of Ishigaki, two small islands rest inside an extraordinary palette of pale turquoise and coral blue. Together, Kamiji and Shimoji are called Aragusuku Islands—better known as Panari.

Panari is not a place for spontaneous ferry hopping or unrestricted sightseeing. Its beauty lies in both the sea and the living traditions of the people who protect it.

What are the Panari Islands?

Panari comprises Kamiji Island and Shimoji Island, between Kuroshima and Iriomote in the Yaeyama archipelago. The local name is associated with the idea of separation. Kamiji preserves a small community and important ceremonial traditions; access to either island depends on the authorized tour and local rules.

Five reasons to visit Panari

1. Panari Blue: brilliant, exceptionally clear reef waters in the Sekisei Lagoon, with colors ranging from pale mint to deep blue. Conditions change with wind, currents and tides.

2. Guided snorkeling: admire coral and tropical fish with a qualified operator. Wear appropriate flotation gear and never stand on coral or touch marine wildlife.

3. Guided village walk: discover traditional stone walls, historic island landscapes and local life on approved paths, accompanied by an authorized local guide.

4. Quiet coastal scenery: photograph the changing blues, beaches and boats from permitted areas. Do not assume all beaches or village paths are open to visitors.

5. Dugong and mermaid stories: Panari has cultural stories associated with dugongs. These are part of the islands’ heritage, not a promise of wildlife sightings.

How to get there: no regular ferry

There is no scheduled passenger ferry to Panari. Arrange a tour that explicitly includes landing if you want to visit the island itself. Some operators depart from Ishigaki; others offer meeting points at Ohara Port on Iriomote. Confirm the boat, pickup point, meals, route and landing conditions before booking.

Half-day versus full-day trips

For a shorter experience, choose a marine tour—but verify whether it actually lands on Panari, as some tours only snorkel nearby. For a fuller experience, a guided island walk plus snorkeling day trip is the classic option.

Illustrative one-day plan: meet your operator in the morning, travel by tour boat, walk permitted village paths with a local guide, break for lunch, snorkel or relax on an approved shore if conditions allow, then return by boat. This is not a published ferry timetable.

Respect local culture and protected places

Panari is not an unrestricted uninhabited island. Sacred sites (utaki) and ceremonial areas may be closed to visitors and photography. Traditional festivals may restrict access entirely. Follow your guide and residents, do not photograph prohibited locations or use drones without permission, and never disturb ritual objects.

Bring water, sun protection, a towel and personal essentials as shops and services are extremely limited. Tours may be changed or cancelled due to weather, sea conditions, tides or cultural events.

FAQ

Can I visit independently? There is no regular ferry; book an authorized landing tour rather than attempting to land on your own.

Is Panari uninhabited? No. Kamiji has a community and important cultural sites.

Can non-swimmers join? Some programs offer non-swimming activities or supported snorkeling, but eligibility depends on the operator’s safety rules.

Can I visit both islands? Not necessarily. Landing locations and access to Shimoji vary by tour, permissions and conditions.

Next in the Yaeyama series: Hatoma Island

After the tranquil waters of Panari, our next island is tiny Hatoma, known for its peaceful village and beautiful beaches.
