Ishigaki’s most photogenic hotel is not necessarily the best one for your trip. A remote resort can be wonderful for relaxing, but inconvenient if you need the ferry every morning. A simple hotel near the port can be a smarter choice.

I have lived on Ishigaki for over a decade and worked for years in guest-facing and concierge-related roles at a five-star island hotel. This is an independent, non-sponsored comparison based on local experience and official hotel information, not a claim that every hotel was personally inspected recently.

Quick answer: choose the location before the stars

Luxury resort stay: ANA InterContinental. Group stay with a kitchen: seven x seven. Compact Maesato base: Comfort Hotel ERA or NEST. Public bath and city access: ART HOTEL. Ferry trips without a car: HOTEL East China Sea or Hotel Miyahira.

1. ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort — full-service luxury

Best for couples, anniversaries, families and people who will actually enjoy the hotel. It fronts Maesato Beach and advertises four indoor/outdoor pools, restaurants and marine activities. The ferry terminal is roughly a 10-minute drive away.

Room tip: Ocean Wing, Bay Wing, Coral Wing and Club InterContinental offer different views and access rules. If an ocean view matters, book an explicitly ocean-view room. Coral Wing includes renovated spacious 50 m² rooms, so it is not automatically a bad choice.

2. seven x seven Ishigaki — kitchens and space

Best for families, groups and longer stays. Official room listings show kitchens, fridges, microwaves and cookware, with washer-dryers in many room types. Pools, a restaurant and bars add a resort atmosphere.

Watch for: this is not a private-beach hotel. The infinity pool and sauna have an age-20-plus rule; check the family pool if traveling with children. Airport transfers are currently listed for suite guests, not every room.

3. Comfort Hotel ERA Ishigaki Island — practical and compact

A sensible base near Maesato for travelers who spend their days snorkeling or sightseeing and mostly need a room to sleep. Compare current rates rather than assuming it is always the cheapest.

Public access to Maesato Beach is not the same as free use of InterContinental guest-only pools or loungers. Breakfast taste is subjective; check the latest photos and inclusions.

4. NEST HOTEL Ishigaki Maesato Beach — simple beach-area stay

Many published room types are around 18 m². It works for couples and active travelers, but not for those expecting a large resort room. The ferry terminal is not within the same convenient downtown walking zone.

Check luggage space, breakfast plans and transport if you will catch ferries on several days.

5. ART HOTEL Ishigakijima — pool and public bath

A useful compromise for families and multi-generational trips: a pool, large public bath and dining facilities, without the cost or isolation of a full beachfront resort.

The hotel is not immediately next to the ferry terminal, and some standard rooms are compact. Buffet value depends on the current menu and price.

6. HOTEL East China Sea — harbor-side convenience

In Misakicho near the port, restaurants and ferry terminal, this is a practical base for day trips to Taketomi and Iriomote. Choose your room type carefully if you want a harbor view.

It is a city waterfront hotel, not a private-beach resort. Floor, balcony and possible harbor noise matter.

7. Hotel Miyahira — best for daily ferry trips

Right by the ferry and bus terminals, with restaurants and shops nearby. It is especially convenient for first-time visitors and travelers without a rental car. The hotel also has an indoor large public bath.

Convenience, not a private beach, is its strength. Check the building and exact room category before comparing rates.

Not bad hotels — just easy to book for the wrong trip

Club Med Kabira and Ishigaki Seaside Hotel

These are better suited to a slower stay in the Kabira area. Daily downtown dinners and ferry trips mean extra travel. Club Med does offer paid pre-bookable airport transfers, so saying it has no transfer at all would be inaccurate. Its all-inclusive model suits people who want to stay at the resort.

Northern guesthouses without a car

Northern Ishigaki is wonderful for quiet nature and stargazing, particularly if you drive. Without a car, check bus schedules, taxis, food options and whether your accommodation actually offers transfers.

Seven things to check before booking

1. Rental car or no car? 2. How many ferry days? 3. Room size and luggage? 4. Is an ocean view guaranteed? 5. Are pool, breakfast, transfer and parking included? 6. Children’s facility rules? 7. Recent low-rated reviews about noise, cleanliness and service?

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay without a car?

Start with Hotel Miyahira or HOTEL East China Sea near the ferry terminal and downtown restaurants.

Can Comfort or NEST guests use all InterContinental facilities?

No. Public beach access and hotel guest-only pools, loungers and facilities are different. Confirm the rules separately.

Is Coral Wing always a bad choice?

No. Its renovated spacious rooms may be a good match. If ocean views are essential, select a room explicitly sold with that view.
