Can you still wear a T-shirt, snorkel with sea turtles and enjoy the beach on Ishigaki in October or November? Often yes. These months can be excellent for sightseeing, with less oppressive heat than midsummer. But comfortable air temperature does not automatically mean calm seas. This independently written guide from Ishigaki-based StarlitSeas Travel compares the two months using Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) 1991–2020 climate normals, then explains how to choose realistic activities.

The numbers below are historical long-term averages, not a forecast for a particular day in 2026. Actual marine activities and ferry operations depend on daily weather, sea conditions and operator decisions.

October or November: which is better for your trip?

Choose October if swimming and snorkeling are your highest priorities and you prefer warmer air. Choose November if you like comfortable walks, scenic drives and less summer heat. Both can be great for Kabira Bay, Tamatorizaki lookout, sunset photography and professionally guided water activities when conditions are suitable. In November especially, the northeasterly wind can make exposed coasts rougher.

October vs. November climate at a glance

According to the JMA Ishigaki station 1991–2020 normals: October has a mean temperature of 26.0°C (78.8°F), average daytime high of 28.8°C (83.8°F), average low of 23.9°C (75.0°F), 211.2mm monthly rain and 5.8m/s mean wind. November averages 23.6°C (74.5°F), daytime highs of 26.2°C (79.2°F), lows of 21.5°C (70.7°F), 138.1mm monthly rain and 5.5m/s mean wind. North-northeast is the most common wind direction in both months.

Around the waters south of Ishigaki, historical mean sea-surface temperatures are approximately 27–28°C in October and around 26°C in November. These are broad offshore sea-surface normals, not a promise of the temperature at any specific beach or snorkeling site.

November has a lower monthly average rainfall than October, but that does not mean sunshine every day. Persistent wind and cloud may matter more for a trip than the rainfall total. Always check daily marine forecasts, currents and your guide’s safety assessment.

What is Ishigaki like in early, mid and late October?

Early October: summer feeling, with typhoon precautions

Warm weather still makes light clothes and water activities attractive. However, typhoons can occur in October; do not assume that the risk disappears after September. For ferry excursions and boat trips, check cancellation rules and keep flexibility.

Mid-October: a pleasant balance of sea time and sightseeing

Many travelers appreciate the mix of warm water and easier sightseeing temperatures. Guided turtle snorkeling, a SUP outing, Kabira Bay and a sunset at Uganzaki can make an excellent plan—if weather permits. Exposed north-facing areas may require rescheduling.

Late October: warm days, bring a light jacket at night

Shorts and T-shirts may still be fine by day, but boat rides, windy lookout points and nighttime stargazing feel cooler. Pack a light windproof layer rather than relying on daytime air temperature alone.

How does November change through the month?

Early November: beautiful for road trips and flexible marine tours

Sunny days are often pleasant for a coastal drive or a glass-bottom boat at Kabira Bay. Snorkeling is still possible when guided operators judge the sea safe. A wetsuit can make time in the water more comfortable, particularly for children and people who get cold easily.

Mid-November: plan around northeasterly winds

Conditions can be cloudy or windy despite mild temperatures. Put your preferred marine activity early in the stay, then swap days if necessary. If boats cancel, replace them with Ishigaki Limestone Cave, the local market, cultural visits or a private sightseeing tour.

Late November: breezy evenings and more reason for layers

Daytime temperatures are usually pleasant for walking, while evenings, ferry decks and the period after swimming can feel cool. Keep a jacket and a dry change of clothes ready, and avoid an itinerary that depends on every boat departure operating as scheduled.

Six excellent things to do in October and November

1. Kabira Bay: Ishigaki’s signature coastal view

Bright sunlight brings out beautiful turquoise colors, while boats depend on current conditions. Enjoy viewpoints and a permitted glass-bottom boat trip; Kabira Bay itself is not a free-swimming beach.

2. Sea turtle snorkeling with a professional guide

Guided snorkeling around the Osaki area is a strong option when weather allows. Wild turtles are not guaranteed, and the operator may change or cancel the site for safety. Wear appropriate flotation and consider a wetsuit in November; never chase or touch turtles.

3. Tamatorizaki and Hirakubozaki: scenic northern road trip

These lookout points reward visitors with wide coastal views without entering the sea. A rental car or private guide is useful for the spread-out route, but be careful on exposed edges in strong wind and check your return travel time.

4. Uganzaki Cape: sunset photography

This western cape is a classic sunset stop. The sun sets earlier in November than in summer, so do not overload your afternoon. Respect safety barriers and avoid cliff edges in windy conditions.

5. Kayaking and SUP, when wind and tide cooperate

There can be excellent beginner-friendly sessions in both months. The correct decision depends on actual wind direction, strength, swell and tide—not just the calendar. Choose guided activity and accept rescheduling if needed.

6. Stargazing and nature at night

Ishigaki can have beautiful autumn night skies, but clear views depend on moon phase, cloud cover, season and observation direction. Do not expect a guaranteed Milky Way photo on any given night. A light jacket and respect for wildlife are essential.

What to pack for October and November

October: breathable T-shirts, shorts, light trousers, UV-protective top, swimwear, grippy shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and compact rain gear. November: bring the same basics plus a light long-sleeve layer or windbreaker. For snorkeling, confirm whether your operator provides a wetsuit. In both months, have a towel and dry clothing for after marine activities.

Can you enjoy Ishigaki without renting a car?

Yes, especially around downtown Ishigaki, Euglena Mall, the public market and the remote-island ferry terminal. However, Kabira Bay and the northern capes are farther apart and bus services can be limited. Confirm actual timetables and last buses. Families, cruise passengers and travelers without a driving license may find a pre-booked private island guide more flexible.

Three realistic itineraries

A. October ocean-and-scenery day

Morning: guided sea turtle snorkeling if conditions permit. Lunch, then Kabira Bay and Uganzaki. Optional stargazing at night, depending on cloud and moon conditions. This is a full day, so cut a stop if transfers are long.

B. November scenic road-trip day

Start at Tamatorizaki and Hirakubozaki, have a pre-checked lunch stop, then visit Kabira Bay before returning to town. In windy or rainy weather, switch to indoor culture or food rather than forcing cliff viewpoints.

C. Relaxed two-day visit

Day one: easy downtown sightseeing and Kabira Bay. Day two: allow for a guided water activity or a private island tour. Do not schedule your only important boat experience in the last few hours before a departing flight.

Typhoons, northerly wind and canceled ferries

October can still see typhoon disruptions, and the north-northeast monsoon becomes a key consideration in November. Even at 26°C, boats may cancel because waves are too high. Some Iriomote Uehara, Hatoma and Hateruma services can be especially weather-sensitive. Check the ferry operator’s same-day announcements and build a buffer before important onward flights.

Frequently asked questions

Is October still good for snorkeling on Ishigaki?

Yes, often, if the guide confirms safe wind, waves and currents on your specific day.

Can I wear T-shirts in Ishigaki in November?
