Kuroshima Island Guide 2026 | Cattle, Cycling & Sea Turtles
已更新:6天前
Just a short ferry ride from Ishigaki lies Kuroshima, a heart-shaped island where cattle famously outnumber people. Here, open pastures meet turquoise shores and the sea breeze sets the pace of the day.
If Taketomi is an old Okinawan melody and Kohama a sugarcane poem, Kuroshima is a love letter from the sea to the grasslands.
Why visit Kuroshima?
Southwest of Ishigaki, Kuroshima is known for its roughly heart-shaped outline, cattle farming, flat cycling roads and sea turtle conservation. It is ideal for families, photographers and travelers looking for a quieter Yaeyama island.
Five must-see places
1. Iko Pier: a long pier extending into brilliant blue water. A wonderful photography stop, but beware slippery surfaces and never jump into the sea.
2. Nakamoto Beach: coral reef scenery and tidal pools can be striking at low tide. Currents and tides can be dangerous; do not assume snorkeling is safe without professional guidance and current local advice.
3. Kuroshima Research Institute: learn about marine ecology and sea turtle conservation. Check current visitor hours, admission and exhibitions before traveling.
4. Cattle pastures and country roads: cycle past peaceful green fields. Stay on public roads, do not enter farms and never feed livestock.
5. Kuroshima Observatory: a viewpoint over the island's low-lying rural landscape.
Ferry from Ishigaki
Take a high-speed ferry from Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal to Kuroshima Port, usually about 25–35 minutes depending on route and sea conditions. Confirm current fares, fuel surcharges and the last return ferry before departure.
Getting around: cycling is best
Kuroshima is relatively flat, making rental bicycles a convenient choice. Check opening hours, bicycle availability, children's sizes and return times ahead of time. Carry water, snacks and sun protection.
Suggested half-day itinerary
Example only, not confirmed sailing times: depart Ishigaki around 09:30; rent a bicycle around 10:00; visit Iko Pier at 10:30; pastures and observatory at 11:30; lunch at 12:30; research institute at 13:30; Nakamoto Beach from shore at 14:30; return on a confirmed afternoon ferry around 15:30 or later.
A full-day island escape
Take extra time for marine ecology, pasture photography and a leisurely coastal walk. Sea turtles are wild and sightings are never guaranteed. Follow professional safety advice for any marine activity.
Frequently asked questions
Is Kuroshima family-friendly? Yes, especially for families who love nature and animals. Be mindful of sun, bicycle safety and tides.
Can non-swimmers visit? Absolutely. Cycling, cattle pastures, viewpoints and the research institute are all land-based experiences.
Kuroshima or Taketomi? Choose Taketomi for heritage streets and buffalo carts; choose Kuroshima for open pastures, cycling and quiet nature.
