Yonaguni is Japan’s westernmost inhabited island, known for dramatic capes, Yonaguni horses, coastal landscapes and its famous underwater formations. It is far from Ishigaki and should not be planned like a quick Taketomi ferry outing. This independent guide draws on over a decade of life on Ishigaki and luxury-hotel concierge experience.

Is Yonaguni worth the trip?

Absolutely for photographers, remote-island travelers, dramatic coastlines, horse lovers and experienced divers. It is not a practical half-day trip. Stay at least one night, ideally with weather flexibility.

How to reach Yonaguni from Ishigaki

Option 1: flight, usually the easiest

Regional flights connect Ishigaki and Yonaguni, with a typical flight time of about 30 minutes. Frequencies and flight numbers change by month, so check your specific date with JAL or the Ishigaki Airport timetable rather than trusting an old daily schedule.

Option 2: the long, infrequent ferry

Fukuyama Kaiun operates Ferry Yonakuni between Ishigaki and Kubura Port. The voyage generally takes about four hours and operates only a couple of days each week in each direction. The operator may cancel for rough seas or dry-docking. Check the exact outbound and return weekdays before booking accommodation.

The local tourism association has listed Ishigaki departures on Mondays and Thursdays, and return sailings on Tuesdays and Fridays, but the ferry operator’s latest notices take precedence. This is not a daily high-speed ferry.

Six essential Yonaguni experiences

1. Cape Irizaki: Japan’s westernmost point

The westernmost-point monument and ocean views are iconic. Strong winds can make cliff edges dangerous; stay on marked paths and do not cross barriers.

2. Cape Agarizaki and Yonaguni horses

The eastern cape has expansive grassland and the island’s famous horses. Do not feed, chase or crowd the animals. Respect fences, roads and their space.

3. Tachigami Rock

A dramatic offshore rock formation and classic coastal photo stop. View from safe designated areas, especially when the wind is strong.

4. Dr. Koto filming locations

Fans of the Japanese drama Dr. Koto can research associated filming locations. Verify current visitor access and hours; do not assume every film location is an open public facility.

5. Underwater formations and diving

Yonaguni’s underwater terrain and seasonal marine encounters attract divers. Currents can be strong, so many sites suit appropriately experienced divers. Hammerhead shark sightings are never guaranteed, and these dives should not be marketed as easy snorkeling for everyone.

6. Kubura, Sonai and Hikawa villages

Explore the island’s distinct settlements, food and culture. Restaurants and services can have limited hours; book meals where possible.

Getting around: rental cars and free local bus

Yonaguni is too large for a casual village-only walk if you want to see the capes. A rental car or pre-arranged transport is usually practical. A free community bus serves the three main settlements, but its schedule was revised in April 2026 and departures are limited. It is not an on-demand sightseeing shuttle.

Sample two-day Yonaguni itinerary

Day 1: western coast and Irizaki

Fly to Yonaguni → collect rental car or meet transfer → Kubura and Cape Irizaki → coastal views → overnight stay and dinner. Keep it flexible around arrival time.

Day 2: Agarizaki, Tachigami and departure

Visit the eastern cape and horses → Tachigami Rock → optional film locations or village stop → return to airport or port early. If traveling by ferry, rebuild the schedule around the actual sailing days.

Budget and weather planning

Allow for flights or ferry tickets, accommodation, rental transport, meals and any diving activities. Bad weather can affect both flights and ferries. The tourism association specifically recommends avoiding tight onward connections and inflexible commitments immediately after leaving Yonaguni.

Frequently asked questions

Can I day-trip from Ishigaki?

A flight-based day trip may sometimes be possible, but with scattered sights and weather risk, at least one night is far more comfortable.

Is there a free bus?

Yes, a limited community bus, but it does not replace a flexible sightseeing car.

Is Yonaguni worth visiting if I do not dive?

Yes. The capes, horses, villages and landscapes are worthwhile on their own.
