Ishigaki New Year 2026–27: Which Restaurants and Shops Close?
Updated October 17, 2026 | Planning a trip between December 29, 2026 and January 3, 2027?
New Year in Ishigaki does not mean the whole island shuts down. But independent restaurants, cake shops, specialty stores and some fuel stations may close for several days, while other shops open for shorter hours. Regular Google Maps opening hours are not reliable for New Year's Day.
The important distinction: last year vs. this year
All shop-specific dates in the tables below are verified historical notices for December 2025–January 2026. They are NOT confirmed opening hours for December 2026–January 2027. Check new notices again before visiting.
Some businesses began their holiday breaks on December 29 or 30.
On January 1, all three floors of Ishigaki Public Market were closed last year, but their reopening dates differed.
Convenience stores and some larger retailers remained open; restaurants could offer shorter hours rather than closing.
Buy essentials early, reserve your special dinners and refuel before driving north.

01 | Restaurants and shops that closed last New Year
Business | Verified holiday closure, 2025–26 |
Shimaryori Urasaki | Closed Dec 30–Jan 4; reopened Jan 5 |
Ishigaki Penguin | Closed Dec 29–Jan 4; reopened Jan 5 |
Patisserie Eclat | Closed Dec 30–Jan 3; reopened Jan 4 |
Penguin Shokudo HQ / chili-oil workshop | Closed Dec 27–Jan 4; reopened Jan 5 |
Shimaryori Urasaki, an island-food restaurant in the Okawa area, announced that it would close from December 30 and return on January 5. If you are counting on a small local restaurant for your New Year's dinner, contact it well before arrival.
Ishigaki Penguin, known for local chili-oil products, had special hours on December 27–28 but closed December 29–January 4. Its headquarters and chili-oil workshop had a different, earlier start to their break.
Patisserie Eclat confirmed a winter closure from December 30 through January 3. If you want a cake for a guesthouse celebration, pre-arrange it instead of shopping at the last minute.
Historical notices and original sources:
02 | Ishigaki Public Market: each floor reopened on a different day
The public market inside Euglena Mall is useful for souvenirs and local products, but do not assume one reopening date applies to every floor.
Market floor | Dec 31, 2025 | Jan 1 onward |
1F food / dining | Open until 18:00 | Closed Jan 1–3; reopened Jan 4 |
2F souvenirs / goods | Open until 18:00 | Closed Jan 1; reopened Jan 2 |
3F dining | Open until 20:00 | Closed Jan 1; reopened Jan 2 |
Individual shops in and around Euglena Mall can still have their own schedules.
03 | Yakiniku and Ishigaki beef: shortened hours are not full closures
Yakiniku Otsuka and Ryukyu Enriki Ishigaki reported earlier closing times on December 31 and January 1 last year. Their notice did not say they were fully closed. If you want a special Ishigaki beef dinner, check last order and book a table ahead of time.

04 | Supermarkets, convenience stores and retail backups
Ishigaki SS Group issued a detailed notice covering some of its retailers and convenience stores. Last year, it listed the following special hours:
DAISO Yaima: Dec 31 until 20:00; Jan 1–3 until 18:00.
DAISO Hirma: Dec 31 until 18:00; Jan 1–3 until 18:00.
Make Man: Jan 1–3 until 18:00.
FamilyMart stores operated by this group: advertised as operating normally across the holidays.
For other supermarket chains, check the exact store, not just the brand. On December 30 or 31, buy drinking water, breakfast supplies, children's essentials and any food you may need at your accommodation.
05 | Driving on January 1? Check fuel stations
Fuel stations may also take New Year's Day off. According to the same 2025–26 Ishigaki SS Group notice:
Ishigaki SS, Shineicho SS, Hirakawa SS and Isobe SS: closed Jan 1; closed at 17:00 on Jan 2–3.
Kabira SS and Ibaruma SS: closed Jan 1–2; open 08:00–12:00 on Jan 3.
Shiraho SS and Airport SS: listed as operating normally through the holiday period.
These are historical dates for specific stations, not a promise about every gas station on the island. Fill up before exploring Kabira or the northern peninsula on New Year's Day.
06 | Practical 4-day planning checklist
Dec 29–30: visit small local restaurants, specialty stores or cake shops before their breaks.
Dec 31: shop during the day and confirm dinner; some stores shut earlier than normal.
Jan 1: prioritize confirmed dining, outdoor viewpoints and attractions whose operators have verified their holiday hours.
Jan 2–3: do not assume all businesses reopen together; Ishigaki Public Market was a good example of staggered reopening.
07 | What about snorkeling, fishing and stargazing?
You may request your preferred travel date, but winter winds, marine conditions and bookings received through other platforms can limit availability. A displayed time or date is indicative, not a live confirmed place. The booking is valid only after direct confirmation by the operator.
