08|Hateruma Island | Nishihama Beach, Southernmost Point & Stars
Japan's southernmost inhabited island, with turquoise sea, cycling and dark skies. Ferry cancellations are a major planning factor.
Planning ferries and island-hopping
Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal is the main departure hub for many inhabited islands. Kayama and Panari require specific booked landing tours. Weather-sensitive routes include Hateruma, Hatoma and Iriomote's Uehara Port. Do not assume a ferry runs every hour, or that every tour actually lands on the island.
With two to three days, pair a Taketomi half-day with one more substantial experience. With four or more days, consider Iriomote and Yubu, a guided Hatoma reef trip, or an overnight Hateruma visit. Always allow for weather-related changes.
Choose guided water activities when necessary. Never stand on coral. Freediving has additional training, supervision and buddy-system requirements beyond casual snorkeling.
