This illustrated adventure map is a creative guide, not a precise navigational map. Check official maps and transport information for actual locations and distances.
Why visit Iriomote and Yubu?
Iriomote, Okinawa Prefecture's second-largest island, is known for rainforest, mangrove estuaries and the rare Iriomote wildcat. Part of the island belongs to a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Tiny Yubu Island is famous for its subtropical garden and water-buffalo cart crossing.
Six memorable experiences
1. Nakama River mangrove cruise: explore beautiful mangroves near Ohara, with routes depending on tides and conditions.
2. Urauchi River and waterfall trails: enjoy a river cruise and forest walking routes; check trail difficulty and any protected-area access requirements.
3. Guided mangrove kayaking or SUP: paddle through quiet waterways with a qualified local guide.
4. Hoshizuna Beach: appreciate clear water and coral scenery; respect marine life and check currents.
5. Yubu water-buffalo cart: travel across the shallow channel from Iriomote to Yubu Island in a traditional cart.
6. Yubu subtropical botanical garden: stroll among tropical flowers, butterflies and lush greenery.
Getting there: Ohara or Uehara Port?
High-speed ferries from Ishigaki Port usually take around 40–50 minutes, depending on the route. Ohara is convenient for Nakama River and Yubu; Uehara serves northern attractions such as Urauchi River. Rough weather often affects Uehara sailings, so confirm alternative transfers.
How to get around
Iriomote is large and public buses are infrequent. A guided day tour with transfers or a pre-booked rental car is usually most practical. Check Yubu cart operating hours.
One-day Iriomote and Yubu itinerary
Example only: depart Ishigaki on a confirmed morning ferry around 08:00–09:00, arrive at Ohara, take a Nakama River mangrove cruise or guided paddle, have lunch, then cross by water-buffalo cart to Yubu's garden before your confirmed return sailing.
Adventure option: stay overnight
Allow at least two days for Urauchi River, waterfalls, kayaking and northern beaches. Some protected trails may require permits or guides. Confirm current rules and weather.
FAQ and safety
Can non-swimmers visit? Yes. River cruises, buffalo carts and botanical gardens do not require swimming.
Is it family-friendly? Yubu and boat cruises are gentle options; hiking and paddling depend on age and fitness.
Is one day enough? Yes for southern Iriomote and Yubu, but allow longer for remote waterfalls and northern scenery.
Never feed or chase wildlife, collect plants or leave litter. Drive carefully, especially at night, to protect the rare Iriomote wildcat.
