Is Ishigaki worth visiting in December? Yes—especially for coastal scenery, culture, photography and a slower pace than midsummer. But winter in subtropical Ishigaki does not mean guaranteed beach weather. Northeasterly winds, clouds and high waves can disrupt snorkeling and ferry excursions. This independent StarlitSeas Travel guide offers realistic December plans grounded in the Japan Meteorological Agency's historical data.

Updated October 2026. Climate figures are 1991–2020 normals, not a forecast for December 2026. Check operators and official announcements for ferries, festivals and actual opening times.

Is December a good time to visit Ishigaki?

December suits travelers who prefer mild sightseeing temperatures, easy walks, traditional villages, coastal viewpoints, local food and potentially winter stargazing. It suits travelers less well if every day must involve snorkeling or offshore boats with no flexibility: winter winds may make such plans impossible on some dates.

December temperature, rainfall, wind and water temperature

According to JMA 1991–2020 Ishigaki Island normals, December has a mean air temperature of 20.5°C (68.9°F), average daytime high of 23.0°C (73.4°F), average low of 18.4°C (65.1°F), total monthly rainfall of 155.2mm (6.1in), mean wind speed of 5.6m/s and prevailing north-northeasterly winds. Mean sunshine totals 89.3 hours.

November is warmer on average at 23.6°C, with average low 21.5°C. December rainfall at 155.2mm is actually slightly higher than November's 138.1mm, so do not assume December is always the dry, sunny month.

The long-term mean sea-surface temperature off southern Ishigaki is approximately 24.7°C (76.5°F) in December. This is a regional ocean average, not a reading at every beach. Wind chill after getting out can make a swim feel much colder.

Early, mid and late December

Early December: scenic sightseeing and flexible marine activities

Sunny days can still be pleasant for town walks and viewpoints. If snorkeling is important, plan it early in your stay so there is room to move the booking if waves rise.

Mid-December: winter constellations and the Geminids

The Geminid meteor shower normally occurs around mid-December, but the 2026 viewing conditions depend on the Moon and weather. Bring a windproof jacket for safe stargazing; do not expect a guaranteed meteor display.

Late December: Christmas and New Year schedules

Holiday hotel pricing, restaurant closures, boat services and special events may vary considerably. Any 2026 Christmas lights, resort countdown or fireworks must be verified through the individual organizer.

What to wear in Ishigaki in December

Pack T-shirts or light long-sleeve tops for calm sunny hours, long trousers, comfortable shoes, sunscreen and a hat. Add a windbreaker, hoodie or light fleece and rain protection for cloudy days, boat decks and nights.

For snorkeling bring a dry change of clothes, a towel and a jacket for the boat. Ask whether your guide supplies a suitable wetsuit and flotation. Children and people sensitive to cold may need shorter immersion times.

Five best sightseeing spots for December

1. Kabira Bay: iconic turquoise water

Enjoy the shoreline from the viewpoint or book a glass-bottom boat if conditions allow. This bay is not a free-swimming beach; avoid going into the water independently.

2. Tamatorizaki Observatory

A relatively easy coastal viewpoint that suits families and short sightseeing stops. Winter wind may be strong on exposed paths.

3. Hirakubozaki and Uganzaki capes

The far-northern lighthouse and the western sunset cape are wonderful for photography. Stay behind barriers, keep clear of cliffs and plan enough driving time before sunset.

4. Taketomi Island: red-tiled houses and village culture

A short ferry trip from Ishigaki Port can offer a memorable island walk. Boats depend on weather, and visitors should respect traditional village residents and private property.

5. Public Market, limestone cave and cultural attractions

When conditions are windy or rainy, explore Euglena Mall, Ishigaki Public Market, limestone caves or local cultural experiences. Check venue schedules and accessibility.

Can you snorkel, kayak or look for manta rays in December?

Guided sea turtle snorkeling

Some operators run guided snorkeling in December, but sea conditions, current, fitness and cold exposure matter. A wetsuit may help. Guides may change locations or cancel, and encounters with wild turtles are never guaranteed.

Kayaking and SUP

Winter paddle trips can be fun on suitable days, but strong northeasterly wind makes unsupervised paddling risky. Choose a guided trip with appropriate flotation and accept date or route changes if the water is unsafe.

Winter manta trips

Some Yaeyama operators offer winter manta-related trips, but destinations, required equipment, age restrictions and weather conditions vary. Sightings of wild animals cannot be guaranteed, so avoid relying on one tour as the entire holiday.

December stargazing: winter constellations and meteors

December nights offer opportunities for winter constellations and possibly the Geminids. The famous bright Milky Way core in summer photographs is not normally the main December evening target. Clear skies, moon phase and safe dark-sky access are essential; a guided photo session cannot promise meteors or clear weather.

December 2026 events: pottery markets, Christmas and New Year

Ishigaki has hosted pottery and craft markets in past winter seasons, and some hotels and businesses offer Christmas menus, lights or countdown celebrations. We have not confirmed the exact 2026 dates, venues or fireworks plans. These are ideas to look out for, not a published official schedule; verify with organizers before visiting.

Three realistic December itineraries

A: Sunny coastal road trip

Kabira Bay, then Tamatorizaki and perhaps Hirakubozaki if time allows. Add a sunset stop only when your return drive is realistic, and do not cram remote attractions into a rushed day.

B: Windy or rainy day

Start with Public Market and Euglena Mall, continue to a limestone cave or cultural attraction and enjoy local food. Stargazing remains optional if the sky clears.

C: Two-day flexible escape

Keep one day for land-based sightseeing and the other as a flexible window for snorkeling, kayaking or Taketomi. Do not schedule a weather-sensitive boat trip immediately before an important departing flight.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ishigaki cold in December?

The monthly air mean is 20.5°C, but strong northerly wind can make conditions feel chilly, especially at night or on a boat.

Can I swim in December?

Sea-surface averages are about 24.7°C, but this does not make all beaches safe. Strong currents, surf and limited lifeguard coverage require caution.

Do turtle snorkeling tours operate?

Some may operate if conditions are safe; neither a departure nor a wildlife encounter can be guaranteed.

Is Ishigaki cheaper in December?

Some off-peak dates can be attractive, but Christmas and New Year rates may rise. Compare your exact travel dates.

Can I visit Taketomi or Iriomote in December?

Yes if ferries are running; check same-day operating status and keep return buffers.

Can I photograph the Milky Way in December?

Winter constellations and meteors are better priorities than assuming the summer Milky Way core will be visible in December evenings.
